I thought ...what is that hole for I wonder ?
But no one I asked... really knew.
Can you all help me.. and tell me what
the purpose of the hole is ?
( I am hoping that it will help hold the
flowers... that I plan to put in the jar...
up a bit straighter. )

Hi Rose! There is actually a glass disk that goes underneath the lid with the cut out in it. It sits on top of the jar and then you screw that zinc lid down over it. Have a nice week! Twyla
Thanks Twyla, I heard someone else say that..but still am confused about what the hole is for...just does not make sensse to me to have a hole in a canning lid for some reason.

I have several of those too. Lids with no glass.
I think using them to hold the flowers up is a great idea!
I bought them to frame something, but now just have them in the store. Too many other projects. =)

PS I'm with you, having the hole still does not make sense.
They are early canning rings. The hole is decorative only. Sometimes the manufacturers name on the embossed glass jar lids showed through.It would probably help the water bath reach the rubber seal.
First you filled the jar with the fruit/vegies, then placed a rubber ring on, then a glass disk, then the silver ring to help hold tight the rubber ring. The rubber rings didn't always seal. Tricky business,,canning in those days. You can buy the works on ebay,,search vintage canning supplies. www.hoosierjar.com is an interesting site.
It would help the flowers hold up as well. I put buttons and stuff in my jars.
