~ EASTLAKE VICTORIAN WALL DECOR~

( Click to enlarge for details )
We were gone all day Saturday....went up to Brenham, Tx..and did some shopping.
We left home with every intention of NOT buying anything larger than an breadbox....( lol )... OK FINE !!
You walk into an Antique shop..and you stumble onto a piece of Eastlake Victorian that you fall in love with immediately....then you ask to " see it" out in the light...taken from under the dusty old stack it was behind when you first spotted it..and your interest grows deeper ...and your hooked.

Other customers in the shop walk by and admire it too.
NO doubt SHILLS, every single one of them !!!! (tongue in cheek ! )
But you TRY to keep a "poker face." ....(smiling) .... SO....our ( truly) delightful antique dealer ( Bebe) ... gives you a price you can't refuse....and...
now.... you own it !

BUT....it's GOT to be made lighter in color somehow...either by stripping it or by painting it...not sure which yet.

The panel in the middle is going to be removed too....to make way for a mirror and we will probably add a shelf at the bottom..and then up on the wall it goes.
It is 3/4 bed size in width.

THERE goes the budget again for a few more months !!
( Return tomorrow for more images from our trip thru the Antique shoppes there. )

Hi Rose ~Well, you have found a gorgeous piece of Eastlake--good for you!! It will be even more fantastic when you add the mirror and shelf...

I love all things Eastlake.

No need to strip. Buy a bonding primer at Lowe's or Home Depot and you are good to go. It bonds with the existing finish! I love it!

Now, you KNOW I had to comment on this post!! What a stunning piece of Eastlake Victorian work! What do you suppose it was in its past life? You made a wise purchase. I love all that spoon carving!!

Cynthia K. Thanks so much.
I sure do like it...but of course, did not "need" it...however, had to have it...I am sure as an antiquer you understand that "reasoning". ( snicker )

Rebecca...it IS a nice example of Eastlake for certin.
Please tell me what does a bonding primer do... to make it lighter ? I have never used that product.

Hi Pam, KNEW you would see this post...and appreciate this piece. THANKS...don't we love Eastlake.
It is the TOP half of a headboard ( or dresser ? ) ..... the dealer thought it was from a bed. She said that is all she got when she bought it.

Rose,
Beautiful! I like the mirror idea but I think I would leave it in it's natural finish. Gorgeous!!

Marilyn and Debbie...I KNOW..it really makes some people squirm to think anyone would do that to an antique.... but our home is so earthy tones, shabby chic and pastels..that I just can't have a piece THIS dark in the middle of my living room wall.
You will see, it will be beautiful.

Rebecca, I re-read your post here..and I understand now what you are saying to me.
I would not want to strip it before painting it...I would strip it INSTEAD of painting it....if I can.
